Causes of Pain
Studies report approximately 80% of Americans experience lower back pain during their lifetime

The nerves which run along spinal column transmit messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Pain is often generated when the nerves are irritated or compressed. Nerve irritation in many instances occurs due to disk damage. Another possible source of back pain is the facet joints and ligaments of the spine. These joints allow for smooth spinal motion when they are properly aligned. If their position is compromised, symptoms occur which manifest as pain.

If pain and discomfort are not addressed, in many cases, the body will compensate by altering structural balance. One may be unaware that the spine has been compromised until the situation becomes acute resulting in pain or discomfort. If ignored, this pain and discomfort can result in:

  • Increased susceptibility to degeneration and arthritis
  • Nerve compression
  • Disk damage
  • Spinal Stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
  • Altered autonomic nerve response
  • Restricted movement of the head and neck
  • Disturbed brain stem function
